This is the aftermath of a train collision in the outskirts of Guwahati, India. The collision involved a train and two elephants. Shared space between people and wildlife in India has led to many gruesome interactions like this, which have become a mounting problem in the country. In another recent collision, four elephants died when they were hit by a train near Telidihi Village.
Train collisions in India have killed 266 elephants from 1987 to July 2017. Railway officials in eastern India have installed devices that loudly broadcast the buzz of swarming honeybees. They hope that the elephants’ fear of insects will keep them away from oncoming trains.
